David Owen Brooks, also known as “Candy Man,” was a accomplice of Dean Arnold Corll, a serial killer who terrorized Houston, Texas in the early 1970s. Corll would lure young boys and teenagers, mostly from disadvantaged neighborhoods, to his home with the promise of alcohol and drugs.

Once there, he would torture, rape, and kill his victims, burying many of them in a boat shed on his property.

Brooks was a young man in his 20s when he met Corll, and the two became close friends. Brooks was known to have a troubled past and had a history of drug abuse. He was also known to have a violent temper and a tendency to be controlling and possessive.

In 1970, Corll began his killing spree, and The Candy Man became an active participant in the murders. He would often help Corll lure victims to the house, and he is believed to have participated in the torture and murder of at least eight young men.

Despite the horrors that were taking place in Corll’s home, the killings went largely undetected for years. It wasn’t until 1973 that the bodies of several victims were discovered, and the full extent of the killings was revealed.

After the bodies were discovered, authorities launched a massive investigation to track down those responsible for the murders. The Candy Man was eventually arrested and charged with several counts of murder.

During the trial, Brooks claimed that he was under the control of Corll and that he was afraid to defy him. He also claimed that he had been a victim of sexual abuse by Corll. Despite these claims, The Candy Man was found guilty of several counts of murder and was sentenced to life in prison.

The Candy Man would often help Corll lure victims to the house with the promise of booze and drugs like candy, and he was believed to have participated in the torture and murder of at least eight young men.

In the years following his conviction, Brooks has maintained his innocence and has filed several appeals to have his sentence overturned. However, these appeals have all been denied, and he remains in prison to this day.

The story of Dean Arnold Corll and David Owen Brooks is a chilling reminder of the brutality and depravity of serial killers, and the devastating impact their actions can have on the lives of their victims and their families.

It is also a cautionary tale about the dangers of drug abuse and the influence of predatory individuals on young, vulnerable people.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice website, The Candy Man, David Owen Brooks, 65, passed away in a Galveston jail hospital two weeks after being admitted with COVID-19 symptoms.

Although he tested positive for the virus and had a variety of coexisting diseases, early postmortem findings indicated that the virus may have had a role in his demise.

For his involvement in Dean Corll’s reign of terror in Houston during the 1970s, which resulted in the deaths of at least 28 adolescent boys and young men, Brooks was serving six life terms in jail.
