Twitter Run Rampant by Nazis, Antisemites, and the N-word Just Hours Under Elon Musk

In the minutes after Elon Musk became Twitter’s formal owner, the network erupted in ugly hate speech.

On Friday morning, the deluge of racist, antisemitic, Islamophobic, homophobic, and transphobic hate speech that has characterized the first hours of Musk’s leadership of the social media platform continued.

“Since Elon Musk became Twitter free speech haven, I’ll say this: FUCK N*****S,” read one tweet. Another user tweeted the phrase “fuck n*****s and fuck the jews” alongside a photo of the far-right icon Pepe the Frog.

Throughout Thursday night and into Friday morning, other Twitter users recorded numerous instances of hate speech.

Parag Agrawal, Twitter’s CEO, and Vijaya Gadde, its longtime head of law, police, trust, and safety, were among the first people Musk fired after becoming the company’s owner. Some have taken this as evidence that Musk will be considerably less restrictive with the content that can be posted on the platform.

The fact that many of the original tweets have been removed and several accounts suspended suggests that Twitter’s moderation standards are still in effect. A search of the most recent tweets for a range of abusive terms reveals an apparently endless stream of toxic content, putting those algorithms to the test on a Friday morning.

On Thursday, Musk tried to convince potential advertisers that Twitter will not become a “free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be spoken with no consequences.”

Former President Trump’s account is one that is likely to be revived under Musk’s watch. On Friday morning, though, Trump declared that he was content with his postings on Truth Social, the social network he founded and which he claimed had “become somewhat of a phenomenon.”

Trump remarked of Truth Social, “also looks and works better to my eye,” in comparison to Twitter and other social networks. I’m relieved that the radical left lunatics and maniacs who actually detest our country are no longer in charge of Twitter. Twitter has to make serious efforts to eliminate the bots and phony accounts that have damaged the platform. It’ll be lot more compact and refined. Truth is my most beloved thing in the world. ”

Users who are ecstatic with Musk’s takeover of Twitter have reported feeling encouraged to engage in direct harassment of other users. Several users, mostly women, have claimed that the amount of harassment and threats they’ve received has increased dramatically in the hours following Musk’s takeover.

Some Twitter users have already announced they will be leaving the platform as a result of Musk’s takeover, which the alt-right is rejoicing over.
